Characterization Notes

Pgs. My character was Abundio

3 Juan is narrating, he talks to his mother and himself. Talks about why he is coming to Comala. He has mixed feelings but wants to come. Shows that he is coming to Comala for his mother, reveals motivation.
4-7 Juan is narrating, he talks to Abundio. Discusses Comala with him. Abundio talks about how hot it is and makes it sound unpleasant. Abundio seems kindly and first impression is that he is here to help. He has a “glimmer of goodwill in his eyes.”
7-9 Juan talks to himself, about Comala and how it should be more alive, gets directions to where he is going, not sure how he feels.
9 Juan Narrates, He talks to Abundio abou a place to stay. Abundio seems to be wary of Comala, speaks of it like a ghost town. Abundio has burros and is friendly as he invites Juan to his house.
9-11 Juan narrates, talks to Eduviges about his mother and the town, Eduviges liked Juan’s mom and the town. Eduviges is focused on, she seems nice and like she deals with everyone else
11-13 Juan narrates, reminisces about Susana, this is where we first find out that he is infatuated with her, seems to be in a dream. Focuses on Susana and Juan and their relationship.
13-14 Pedro is narrating, he interacts with his grandma and is sent to find supplies, he was day dreaming of Susana, he does what his grandma says. We see that Pedro lives in poverty.
14-15 Pedro narrates, still dreaming of Susana, interacts with mother, she then goes away and sobs, someone died?
15-20 Juan Narrates, talks to Eduviges about news and of his mother, finds out that she was married to Pedro and what that was like, learns that Eduviges sleeps with Pedro. Tells more about Eduviges and Dolores, reveals their friendship and relationship with Pedro.
20-21 Pedro talks to his grandma, it is a memory, perhaps a memory of when Susana leaves. Pedro is really obsessed with her, keep seeing that more and more.
21-23 Juan narrates talks to Eduviges, learn more about Eduviges, and maybe the deaths that are in the village? Spirits?
23-25 Pedro narrates, he talks to a spirit of his mother maybe? Seems like he thinks that this kind of thing is normal. There seems to be a lot of rain with Pedro, lost a lot of family members.
25-26 Pedro pays off a priest to send his son to heaven, priest does not like this but Pedro is ok with it, Reveals the corruption going on in the town.
26-28 Father Renteria is narrating, talks about the death of Miguel Paramo with his niece. Find out that she was raped by Miguel. Focuses on Miguel find out that he is a dirty Rapist.
28-30 not really sure? Talks about Miguel’s stallion and introduces new characters, confusing section. Why is it in here?
30-32 Again not sure, just people talking to Father Renteria maybe?
32-33 Juan narrates, he sleeps fitfully andd is woken by a noise which proves to be a ghost of Damiana, talk about herself a tiny bit. Focuses on Damiana find out she is dead.
33-34 Fulgor narrates, seems to be having a conversation to Eduviges and the people that are in her inn about a room and about the Patron and his son. Reveals that no one really seems to like who I am assuming is Pedro?
34-37 Fulgor is narrating talks to Pedro about his debts and what he should do, make a plan of how to get our of the debts, his opinion of Pedro raises as a result. Concentrates on Pedro and reveals his underhanded ways.
37-38 Fulgor narrates, talks to himself, reveals that Pedro’s father thought he would be useless, seems impressed that Pedro knows so many tricks to get what he wants. Reveals more about Fulgor and that he was working for Pedro’s father and his place.
38-39 Fulgor Narrates, he talks to Dolores and tells of how Pedro wants to marry her, she seems to be very excited and flattered that he wants too. Reveals how influential Pedro is as well as the fact that Fulgor is at his bidding.
40-41 Fulgor reports back to Pedro, tells him that the wedding is on and what they must do, also makes plans to take more land for himself, focuses on Pedro and shows how he operates.
41 Fulgor reports to Pedro that he has done a job, Pedro is on his honeymoon, reveals he is married and that Fulgor is a murderer.
41-43 Juan narrates
43-44 Juan Narrates, not sure who he talks to but he talks, reveals more about the town and how Ghostly it is
44-45 Two characters talk, they are scared of Pedro but one wants to stand up to him, Reveals how Pedro has taken control of the town and how he rules it using fear.
45-46 Not sure who is talking, gives names but don’t know why I should care, reveals a dying father
46 Maybe Pedro?
46-47 Juan narrates, he appears to be losing his mind a bit, meets the twins, is taken into their house, I think that this reveals the beginning of Juan’s fall into insanity.
47-53 Juan is sleeping, not sure who narrates he is asleep and the twins are discussing him, he appears to toss and turn a lot, I think he is getting more crazy, that is what this reveals.
54-58 Juan lays in bed and is offered tea to make him feel better, he interacts with the twins and one of them leaves, reveals a lot about the twins, I think that the female one is one of the actual living people of Comala and that the boy is no longer with the living, so now that he is gone she is stuck alone forever, reveals that Juan dies as well, pretty important section, give a lot of insight into the ideas of living and dead within the town and adds one more to the dead.
58-61 Juan narrates, finally admits that he is dead but I had my suspicions earlier, talks to other spirits, reveals that there are indeed other dead spirits in the town not sure who is dead or not though.
61-65 I do not know who is narrating, I am not sure what is going on in the section nor what is revealed, I thought that Miguel was dead and now he is back alive, not even sure what this reveals.
65-68 reveals a lot of interesting points about Juan, he seems to be narrating and in the ground now meaning he is dead but he is still locked in the purgatory that is Comala, he is not sure where his soul will go. Reveals why some of the characters are still in Comala I think, they are also stuck in between but Miguel has moved on because he was pardoned?
68-75 Renteria seems to be narrating this section, he talks to a lot of different people and reminisces. Reveals a lot about him and other characters, shows where Miguel has come from and that Pedro must have slept with lots of women, also reveals that Renteria is a troubled man and the bonds he has with the Paramo’s and the seriousness in which he takes his job.
75-78 I think that Pedro is narrating this chapter, this is because it talks about Susana, he always talks about her and the wind is always present when he does, reveals that he will die and will be buried in a black box.
78-81 Juan narrates, he interacts with Dorotea, he hears a moaning and they discuss it, kinda creeped me out as it was described as a moaning. Reveals that the dead can be heard but not by everyone. I thought that it focused on Juan and reiterated the fact that he is dead.
81-85 The San Juans come back into the novel, it seems to be a discussion between Fulgor and Pedro and Pedro with himself, mostly seems to be reminiscing, it reveals a lot about their relationship and how it is started as well as the relationship between the San Juan’s. Shows that Pedro will do anything even to the person he loves, this is shown when he kills her father to get to her.
86-93 Not sure who narrates but it involves conversations between Susana and Justina as well as Susana and Father Renteria and Susana and herself. I thought that Susana had a disdain for all of these people including herself. Revealed her crazyness and it was odd that she was now attached to the wind and the rain, perhaps because she was married to Pedro? Interesting how she did not like Father Renteria and seemed to cast him aside, this section revealed the most about Susana so far.
93-95 Pedro narrates, he interacts with a messenger, finds out that Fulgor is dead, does not seem to affect him much, I thought the section concentrated on Pedro and how he was feeling, Fulgor did not seem to matter much but he longed to know what was wrong with the still living Susana, maybe the dead do not matter to him?
95-96 Susana narrates, talks to Pedro I think? Pedro seems to think that she is crazy, which she is, reveals how sexual she is as she was having sex with the sea.
96-99 Pedro Interacts with a group of rebels, not sure who narrates, he does not seem bothered by this, reveals how he plans on dealing with anything, showed a lot about how much control he believes that he has.
99-100 Juan and Dorotea are talking again about the voices that they have been hearimg from other graves, want to know what they are saying.
100-101 Susana narrates, she is reminiscing about her past husband, reveals again how sexy she is, she misses his body misses the physical things of their relationship.
101-104 Not sure who narrates but it is Pedro interacting with his lawyer, they talk about giving the lawyer a loan, this section reveals a lot about Pedro and Miguel, Miguel did more bad things then we knew and the lawyer covered for him and it shows either how poor or how ungrateful that Pedro is as he would not give the lawyer much money.
105-107 Damiana is narrating, sounds like she is reminiscing about things that happened in the past with her and Pedro, reveals how Pedro chases women and how he tried to get her.
107-108 Pedro gives advice to someone? Not sure what the meaning of this is so late in the book?
109-115 Susana interacts with Justina and Father Renteria. She does not care about death and she only believes in hell, she also does not respect the father and does not believe there is a heaven s wishes to be left alone as she dies. Reveals that she is ready for death and does nto beleve in god, think has particular impact given that perhaps Comala is a purgatory and that she knows that and just wants to move on the easy and relaxing way?
115-117 The solemn even turns into a party, Pedro is still mourning, he says that the town will starve, shows the power that he has in the town, if he dies the town does.
117 Not sure what is going on here, the revolution did not hold much importance seems to break up meaningful things with filler, why is this here?
117-118 Pedro narrates, talks to himself and the dead Susana, he seems depressed, reveals how sad he is and that he too is ready for death?
118-123 Not sure who narrates but Abundio interacts with some new characters, then he goes and stabs Pedro, reveals that Abundio had a wife as she had died and he no longer has his burros, also shows that he has murdered someone, quite a stretch for the friendly person who helped Juan at the beginning to be stabbing people, gave him a crazy kind of thing about him, revealed that he was dead at the beginning and that maybe he was crazy during life and once he died he became a better person?
123-124 Pedro narrates, again he talks to himself and the dead Susana, he then dies himself, it revealed how much he loved her, she was the last thing he thought of and he said he was coming to her.

Tory Greene
Period 3
Pedro Paramo Characterization Notes

P. 3-4: Juan talking to reader…? Pedro Paramo is spoken of and Juan’s mother.

P. 4-7: Juan talking to reader…and Abundio. Learn more about Juan’s mother and her connection to Pedro and Comala, learn more about Pedro, but not much.

p. 7-9: Juan talking to reader about Comala and a woman he gets directions from

p. 9: Juan talking reader about his conversation with Abundio who tells him to find Eduviges

p. 9-11: Juan meeting Eduviges. We learn she knew his mother – Delores.

p. 11-13: Pedro thinking about Susana, who is not described, just named by him. He also talks to his mother…he must be a child. Grandmother also introduced, but never described or anything.

p. 13-14: Pedro speaking to grandmother (he is a child). Susana mentioned again lovingly by Pedro.

p. 14-15: A new and unknown narrator, though it jumps to Pedro’s thoughts for a second. The narrator speaks of Pedro again as a child or at least in the past

p. 15-20: Conversation between Eduviges and Juan about his mother, Delores. Also learn that Abudnio is dead, and about the town… Then Juan narrates a bit. Eduviges speaks of a medicine man – not real though, no good intentions. Learn a lot about Delores and Pedro, how Eduviges went to Pedro in Delores’ place…

p. 20-21: Pedro speaking to Susanna about leaving.

p. 21-23: Juan speaks to Eduviges. We learn about Miguel, Pedro’s son and how he died. Horse mentioned oddly, named El Colorado.
What is the significance of the horse? Is it a symbol for running away, like the people running away from death?

p. 23-25: Some unknown narrator is speaking about Pedro’s father, Lucas’ death. His mother tells him.

p. 25-26: Some unknown narrator speaking. Father Renteria is introduced. This is the night of Miguel’s death. Father Renteria does not want to pardon Miguel but Pedro pays him.

p. 26-28: Conversation between Father Renteria and Ana. He tells her of Miguel’s death (we learn Miguel raped Ana – father Renteria’s niece and killed her father).

p. 28-30: Conversation between new characters, Terencio and Ubillado. Speak about Miguel…?
What is the significance or even the reason that this passage is in here? Why is this important?

p. 30-32: Starts with narrator about Father Renteria and then switches to him narrating. He is struggling with pardoning Miguel, and pardoning sinners in general. Eduviges and her sister Maria Dyada come up. He doesn’t pardon Eduviges because her sister doesn’t have money. We learn Eduviges committed suicide.
Does he act out of greed for money, or is it just Pedro, who seems to be above and more powerful than God?

p. 32-33:Juan talking to Eduviges and narrating. He sleeps, wakes up to a scream, and Eduviges is gone and Damiana is in her place. She lived at the Media Luna as, maybe one of Pedro’s wives…? We learn Toribio was hanged in the room and maybe that is what Juan heard in his sleep.

p. 33-34: Fulgor Sedano is introduced and narrates. We learn he does the dirty work for Pedro.

p. 34-37: Outside unknown source narrates scene between Fulgor and Pedro. Pedro is poor.
Why does Fulgor follow Pedro’s orders without any anger really? He must be mad but he doesn’t care? Is he afraid for his life or it is just all he has is this job?

p. 37-38: Fulgor’s inner thoughts about Pedro, Miguel, Lucas and all is revealed. He is annoyed.

p. 38-40:Mix between outside narrator and Fulgor narrator. This is when Fulgor tells Delores that Pedro wants to marry her. She asks for date extension but it is no use.

p. 40-41:Conversation between Fulgor and Pedro confirming the marriage. Toribio’s murder is planned.

p. 41: Toribio’s murder by Fulgor is confirmed by Fulgor to Pedro.

p. 41-43: Juan is narrating about murmur and the town’s creepiness. Conversation between Juan and Damiana about her family who is dead and Juan starts wondering if Damiana is dead – she doesn’t answer.

p. 43-44: Juan sees two women and tries to talk to them. They think he is Filoteo who gets the women for Pedro.

p. 44-45: Toribio speaks to Galileo about the rumor that Pedro bought his land. Galileo knows that Toribio will be murdered.

p. 45-46: Some odd crazy conversation between young lovers. Chona is the girl and we don’t know the boy. He wants her to run away with him, but she won’t leave her old dying father.

p. 46: I don’t know, incomplete sentences and a narrator of someone, maybe Chona…?

p. 46-47: Juan meets the brother and sister who sleep naked. ?
Why are they naked and why do they think this is normal? This is such a weird section. Yeah!

p. 47-54: Juan narrating. He is basically eavesdropping on the brother and sister while he is “asleep.” The woman says Juan is thrashing around and acting crazy dangerous like. The man, Donis, just wants to sleep. Then he wakes when the man is gone. He speaks with the woman about where the roads go and how the brother and sister marriage relationship keeps her in shame and inside. Juan suggests they separate and leave Comala.

p. 54-55: While Juan is resting a woman comes into the hut and takes sheets out of a trunk.

p. 55-56: I think this is Juan’s dream. He is sleeping with the woman, but then it doesn’t seem like a dream at all. They wake and she says that Donis is gone and she doesn’t think that he is coming back and acts like she will stay with Juan now. She left him food that she traded wit the sheets. He didn’t eat.
If she had to trade sheets to get some food, which means they don’t normally eat, which means they must be dead, but then I don’t think Juan eats it either. Are they all dead? hmmm

p. 56-57: Short confusing conversation between Delores – not italicized, and Juan. She can’t see him.

p. 57: Juan wants to sleep on the floor but the naked woman talks him into sleeping with her.

p. 57-58: Juan wakes up sweating and he can’t breath. He goes outside…

p. 58-61: Juan and Doretea are apparently dead and in a grave together talking about how he died.

p. 61-65: Odd scene including Fulgor, Pedro, who talk about Miguel, and Miguel who talks to several people. Narrator is unknown.

p. 65-66: Doretea speaking with Juan about the rain and murmurs.
This is so interesting how the body and the spirit are separate, however the conciseness of the people have apparently gone with the bodies, or maybe both entities have a separate consciousness. It seems the opposite of what we normally think, that the body is just a lump of flesh and the “person” goes with the spirit or soul…

p. 66-68: Outside narration of Fulgor bringing Miguel’s body to Pedro and we see his reaction.

p. 68-75: This is the night of Miguel’s death and it is focused on Father Renteria’s perspective. He went to get pardoned by another priest who wouldn’t do it. Renteria represents sin itself as well. Flashes to when Renteria brought Miguel as a baby to Pedro. He seems to almost go crazy taking confession again and again from the same people – he sees all the sin that he seems to just be excusing.

p. 75-78: Susana narrating and talking sometimes to Justina. She speaks in crazy unconnected topics and thoughts.

p. 78-81: Apparently Juan had heard Susana speaking because he asks Doretea who what talking. It was Susana in a near b grave. Then we hear a man talking as well about how Pedro murdered him I think. Doretea tells Juan about Susana and Pedro’s love for her, their history.

p. 81-82: Fulgor tells Pedro that Susan is back in town with her father.

p. 82-83: Pedro speaks about Susana, to himself most likely.

p. 83-85: Susana’s father is speaking to Susan about Comala and Pedro and the badness. He tells her that Pedro wants to marry Susana and she is willing.

P.85-86: Pedro talks to Fulgor about Susana and how he wants her father killed so she will marry him.

p. 86-89: Detailed description of Comala, and Indians and the market. Justina is buying herbs for Susana. Justina imagines Susana’s father telling her to leave, but Justina pleads to stay and that Susana needs her. Then Susana and Justina speak and Justina threatens to leave and they both know she won’t.

p. 89-91: Outside narrator showing a scene with Susana and Justina about the cat, Susana is crazy. Susana remembers a time when her father made her do into a mine looking for money and she found skeletons instead.

p. 91-93: Susana is walking around her room at night and the wind is prominent. Father Renteria comes to take her confessions. She doesn’t want to.

p. 93-95: We meet El Tartamundo, a revolutionary, who is ordered by Fulgor to get the rest of his men and come see Pedro.

p. 95-96: Susana is talking in her grave and Juan and Doretea listen. She talks about swimming naked in the sea.

p. 96-98: Pedro meets with the revolutionaries, promises them money and men and sends them away.

p. 98-99: El Tilcuate is learned more abut and we see that Pedro is working with him, and he is going to fight in the revolution with the people, and hopefully eventually become the leader.

p. 99-100: Juan tells Doretea that Susana used Pedro’s body for warmth…but mentally was in love with someone else.

p. 100-101: Susana dreams and Pedro watches saddened that she is crazy and he can’t help. We learn or assume Florencio is her previous husband that she still loves and misses.

p. 101-103: Gerardo, Pedro’s accountant and lawyer tells Pedro that El Tilcuate and his men were beaten. And that he is leaving. He expects to get paid and thanked but e doesn’t.

p. 103-105: Gerardo returns and Pedro pays him just a little more to keep working

p. 105-107: Narration of Damiana watching Pedro go into Magarita’s room. She remembers when she refused him and regrets it.

p. 107-109: El Tilcuate (Damasio) tells Pedro he didn’t get beaten but that they need more money and Pedro gets mad and refuses him.

p. 109-111: Conversations between Susana and Justina. Pedro comes and Father Renteria also to give Susana communion.

p. 111-113: Conversation between Fausta and Angeles about the light in Pedro’s house and that someone must have died…

p. 113-115:They know Susana is going to die and Father Renteria tries to come and give her prayer and pardon her or whatever but she is not very cooperative and just wants to sleep.

p. 115: Doretea and …? She saw Susana die

p. 115-117: The morning of Susana’s death the bells ring and ring for days and days. People think it is a celebration so they do but it’s not. Narration.

p. 117: El Tilcuate and Pedro speak about revolution

p. 117-118: Pedro talks to himself, grieving for Susana. He is wasting away because of his heart ache.

p. 118-123: Ines and Gamaliel (asleep) are the bartenders. Abundio goes in the morning and gets really drunk and Ines gives him the drinks. He heads home but goes in the wrong direction. Goes to Media Luna and talks to Damiana who screams. He stabs…her and Pedro or her, or Pedro?
Who does Abudio kill and if it is just Damiana like it seems, then how and when does Pedro die?

p. 123-124: Pedro watches Susana’s or Damiana’s funeral procession and the dies I think.
Does Damiana coming back at the end represent that he is now dead too, so they can interact, or does this just show that this is not her funeral procession, this is before she died and its Susana’s funeral, and that Pedro had been living dead I guess you could say, for a while? Weird ending!

Pedro Paramo notes:

Page 3- In this section, Juan is speaking with his mother. His mother specifically asked him to get revenge on his father. “make him pay, son, for all those years he put us out of his mind.”

Page 4-7- In this section we are introduced to Juan as he begins his journey to Comala. We also meet Abundio, who is the man who takes people to Comala. We also learn that Juan is not the only son of Pedro Paramo. We learn that Pedro must have many children, considering that Abundio says “We are all his son’s” Abundio also shows his distaste for Pedro, calling him “living bile”(6)

Page 7-9- Juan gets directions to where he is going, he notices that Comala is a strange place. He also finds out that the man with the burros was in fact Abundio. Abundio tells him to find Dona Eduviges.

Page 9-11- Juan meets Eduviges and she informs him that his mother has already told her that she should be expecting Juan. Juan seems confused. Eduviges causes confusion in that she tells him she was already expecting him, yet later she questions how can he expect things of her when she did not know he was coming. Juan also finds out that Eduviges was a friend of his mothers, and Eduviges speaks highly of Juan’s mother.

Page 11-14- We are now introduced to Pedro. WE learn that he daydreams about Susanna and is obsessed with her. We also learn that he dreams of wealth, and tries to have power and control over everything. Pedro’s grandmother tells him that they are not wealthy; they have to trade and make bargains with others to get the things they need.

Page 14-15- Pedro is still obsessed with Susana still daydreaming of her. His mother begins to sob… I think his grandfather died, all Pedro can say is that he “feels sad.”

Page 15-20- We now learn more about Abundio in this section. We learn that Eduviges thinks of him as a “good man”. Eduviges used to give Abundio something in return for his bringing people to her house. Then we find out something bad happened to Abundio. We don’t learn exactly what, only that he went deaf. Before the “accident” he was a big talker but from then after he never spoke. “he wasn’t struck dumb” but he just didn’t have anything to talk about. Eduviges still spoke highly of him, just as she did of Juan’s mother. We also learn more about Juan’s mother’s relations with Pedro Paramo, we learn that she was advised not to sleep with him the night of her wedding so she had Eduviges do it for her, although nothing ended up happening because Pedro was too tired.

Page 20-21- Pedro is infatuated with Susana. We also get information about Pedro’s character. We learn that he is not concerned with others. He does not care about anyone except himself and maybe Susana. “Let other’s be patient, grandmother. I’m not one for patience.”(20)

Page21-23- Juan is again talking with Eduviges, we learn about Miguel Paramo and his horse. Eduviges asks if Juan has ever heard the moan of a dead man... Juan replies no. Maybe also symbolism of doors, being open or closed, or not even existing… passing between purgatory and heaven/hell.

Page 23-26- Rain/ weather seems to be more prominent. Possibly a change of narrator, or maybe when Pedro is present? Motif of footsteps? It seems Pedro is speaking to spirits… possibly his mother about the death of his father. I am confused in this section.

Page 26-28- Father Renteria is introduced, he is narrating in this section. He speaks about Miguel Paramo’s death, we learn that Miguel raped Renteria’s niece, Ana. Father Renteria shows hesitation in his power as a “father” he says he pardoned him, although he only thought it. This shows an interesting side for Father Renteria, is there a need for his as a power figure of the clergy?

Page 28-30- Miguel and his horse are going to Contala… They complain about their bodily injures, and say some of it is because of the “Patron”… Not really sure what it is telling us, other than another story within the novel.

Page32-33- Juan is narrating; he hears a ghost and assumes it is Eduviges, when actually finds out that it is Daminana. Juan learns that this is the woman who took care of him at the Media Luna when he was a child. Daminana speaks of a hanging of long ago, and says that Eduviges is still a lost soul.

Page 33-34 Fulgor is the narrator; he has a conversation with Eduviges. And we also learn that no one really likes Pedro. They also talk about “little Pedro”.

Page 34-37- Pedro and Fulgor are talking about Pedro’s debt and they try to devise a plan to fix it. Supposedly if Fulgor can ask Dolores to marry Pedro then everything will work out because her family can buy the land, and they will be out of debt.

Page 37-38- Fulgor is again narrating. We learn more about Pedro’s life and maybe reason to why he acts the way he does. We learn that Pedro’s father thought he was useless would never amount to anything of purpose. We also learn that Fulgor worked for Pedro’s father. We also learn that Fulgor believes that Pedro plays manipulative tricks to get what he wants, basically to have control and power over everything.

Page 38-39- Fulgor goes to talk to Dolores and informs her that Pedro would like to marry her. She cannot believe that his has happened. This is a prime example of just how manipulative Pedro is and also the name and figure eh has made of himself. People that do not even know him personally would give anything to be with him. Dolores also thanks God at the end of this section. She thanks him for “giving me don Pedro’… “even if later he does get tired of me”.

Page40-41- Fulgor goes back to Pedro and tells him that Delores is ecstatic to be marrying him. Pedro asks if he asked for any money upfront, of course Fulgor did not, he didn’t want to ruin her happiness. This again shows Pedro’s character and how he really cares about money.

Page41- Fulgor narrates; he tells Pedro he has completed a job. This section reveals that Fulgor is not above murder, and the marriage will go through, Pedro is on his honeymoon.

Page41-43- Damiana and Juan are walking through town, she tells him the town is filled with echoes… footsteps are again present. Juan could hear many sounds, like parties and fiestas and people, yet when he went looking he could find no one, nor see anyone.

43-44- There is a random section about women trying to avoid Fulgor because they know that he is the man who gets the girls for him. I am not sure why this is included except to show that everyone is aware of Pedro and his right hand man, Fulgor, and the things they do… especially getting women. Although given the chance these women would probably get with Pedro as well.

44-45- Galileo and another person are talking about Pedro Paramo, they talk about more in depth how he rules by fear and is manipulative.

45-46- A new character Chona is introduced, I am not sure of the significance. Murmurs are more present. Sounds and voices are sounding…. Now sure what this is suggesting.

46-47- Juan meets the naked people, they just don’t directly answer the question when he asks if they are dead. They just smile. Juan seems to be moaning and butting his head on the door, just as Eduviges asked before if Juan had ever heard the moan of a dead man… maybe Juan is becoming more dead…? If that’s possible..

47-54- Juan narrates this section. He listens to the naked brother and sister, where it is revealed that they are actually brother and sister, and they have basically hooked up. And the sister has to live in shame because she cannot be forgiven of the sin she has committed. In the morning the brother is gone and Juan talks to the sister about their relationship and her past.

55-58- Juan is dreaming or something, or finally sleeping, he dreams he is sleeping with the sister. He see’s the sister’s sister getting sheets or something. When Juan wakes up he talks to the sister, she says that Donis is gone and she doesn’t think he will come back. She is lonely and seems like she needs a man, so she says that Juan can just stay with her. She also said that she traded the sheets with her sister for food for Juan. Which shows that they never eat, meaning they might be dead? Juan can hear his mother but he cannot see her.

58-61- Juan and Dorotea are apparently dead, supposedly by being drowned. They lay in the graveyard together listening to other people’s life stories and how they died.

61-65- Fulgor is in this section... I am not exactly sure. But then Miguel returns and asks about Doretea, also damiana asks the same question…. Damiana tells Miguel that Doretea comes by the kitchen for breakfast every morning.. if he wants to see her. It also talks about the idea that Fulgor offered her some deal, as usual.

65-66- More is revealed about people and why they are stuck in Comala, paralleling purgatory. It seems that Juan was forgiven.. or maybe he is just visiting the graveyard.. even though he apparently is dead.. I am not sure I am confused, but I think we learn why Eduviges for example is in Comala, because she killed herself, so she can’t pass to heaven or hell, she is stuck in purgatory that is how she pays for her sin.

66-68- This section seems to have a lot to do with footsteps, Fulgor could tell who it was by the footsteps… “slow, scraping footsteps” He recollects his father’s death. Then maybe it talks about Miguel’s death.. he did it on his own??

68-75- Father Renteria narrates this section, he seems to be showing his insecurities. He hides behind bushes and he goes to another priest to ask for forgiveness, the priest tells him that he should not allow people to confess to him, but as soon as he leaves he goes back and allows all these women to confess to him. He seems odd and bored as they confess to him, and he gets almost entranced because every woman says the same things, and he can reply the same.

75-78- I think this is possibly Susana or Pedro.. I am somewhat confused.. Although I think maybe it is Pedro searching for Susana….. not sure at all!

78-81- Juan is with doretea listening to Susuana’s story I believe, and how Pedro loved Susana, she is very attractive etc. Another man’s story is told, it just tells how Pedro killed him along with other people… Pedro apparently killed many…

81-85- Susana comes back into town, we learn a lot about her past, and how kinda creepy her father is to her… possibly some sexual abuse. We also learn about Pedro, and how he will do anything to gain control and get what he wants, being Susana. He even goes so far as to kill her father, but covers it to make it look like it’s a mining accident.

85-89- These sections are somewhat odd, Comala is described. As well as Justina says that Susana needs her, because Susana needs someone to take care of her… finally Justina says that she will leave.. but it won’t happen

89-91- Susana and Justina are again in the section; there is a very odd part with the cat in between Susana’s legs… This makes her think back to when her father I am guessing sexually abused her in the mine.

91-93- Father Renteria comes to hear Susana’s confessions although she does not want to confess to him, possibly because she is so messed up in her head. She obviously had a poor childhood where she was taken advantage of, and now she is all sexual and does not want to confess.
93-95- I am not even sure why this part about El Tatamundo man is even in this other than he is there to see Pedro. As well as to tell him that Fulgor has been murdered… Pedro feels kind of bad about Fulgor’s death but soon after that his thoughts just turn to Susana…. So obviously he doesn’t care too much about this person who has been doing all his dirty work.

95-96- We just hear more about Susana and her naked infatuation.. she is swimming in the sea naked.. Juan and Dorotea are still listening.

96-98- Pedro is meeting with the revolutionary people he tells them he will give them money… This is interesting because usually Fulgor is the one doing the dirty work.. so its weird that Pedro is finally doing something for himself

98-99- This just talks about the revolution and getting men to sign up to form a stronger bumch of men. Pedro says he will give ten peso’s for each man… this is probably a lie.

99-100- I think this may be susuana talking again about her past, it is still Juan and Doretea who are listening. I think it may be Susana because she says something about her feet being kept warm between someones legs.. seems like a Susana remark.

100-101- Susana is talking. Susana’s character really comes out. It shows how obsessed she is with physical attributes, not so much the soul, but that she wants her husbands body on hers etc… she is just a nut job! Maybe this comes from her sexual abuse at a young age.

101-104- This section reveals more about Miguel, and that he really was a lot worse than we thought and this lawyer apparently was able to save him at least temporarily. We also learn much more about Pedro and how much of a cheapskate he is.. he uses everyone for his own benefit and tries to rig the system to get his way.

105-108- I think this section just reveals more about Pedro and his woman chases. Damiana is the narrator and she explains that Pedro tried to get her too.

109-115- In this section we learn about Susana, she is ready to die… we also learn that she does not believe in heaven.. only hell. Which is weird why would you believe in only hell? Maybe she was destined to this, or maybe that was the way she was raised, to only see the bad in things, and really only focus on physical nature not actually spiritual growth.

115-117- Pedro is so sad Susana dies… he is mourning he also says something about if he were to die so would the town and everyone. This is an odd accusation… it seems that he feels he has complete control over everyone which in fact he probably does??

117-118- Because Susana is dead, Pedro feels he as no reason to live.. he wants to die.

188-121- Abundio is brought back into the scene this new section actually happens before the actually first scene of the novel begins.. But Abundio wants to get really drunk really fast he has had enough, he sells his burros. He is sad because his wife has died. He does everything until finally it becomes to much. The living bile piece is brought back up.. Abundio vomits up pedro basically…

121-123- Abundio comes at Damiana with a knife.. she screems this is what actually causes him to go deaf. Damiana says he is going to kill Pedro, Pedro hides because he does not want Abundio to kill him. The men come and take Abundio away to be sentenced to death most likely

123-124- At the very end we learn Abundio dies, and Damiana comes and asks Pedro if he is going to eat dinner, he says he is coming and he dies like a pile of rocks. He only thinks about Susana for a second, but is mostly frightened because Abundio will be able to come at him, and he wont have his hands to protect him.

Pedro Notes

3-6-The narrator is Juan. These pages tell about his journey to Comala to find his father, Pedro Paramo. He promised his mother he would find her to “make him pay.” He meets a burro driver that helps him get to Comala, who claims that Pedro Paramo is his father too. This section introduced Juan and his mission in the novel, to find his father. It shows that he is determined to keep his promise to his mother and find his father, as he takes a journey to Comala. It is revealed that his father, Pedro Paramo, is already dead.

7-11 The narrator in pages 7-11 is still Juan. He starts by describing Sayula (where he came from) and the contrasting different environment in Comala. The burro driver tells Juan his name is Abundio and to go find Dona Eduviges. He arrives at Eduviges’s house has a conversation with her about his mother and how she had spoken to his mother a few days ago. It seems that he is more confused after talking to Eduviges about his mother and tired from the hot journey to Comala. Dona Eduviges is introduced in these sections. She seems nice and welcoming, since she let Juan stay the night. However, when she started to talk about Juan’s dead mother, it created a mysterious feeling toward her. There is also a ghostly feeling about Juan revealed toward the end of the sections on page 11 when he begins to feel weaker and weaker and “surrendered completely.” Are they ghosts?

11-14- The narrator in these sections is Pedro Paramo as a child. He is just daydreaming and thinking about Susana, talking to her and thinking about flying kites with her. It is focused on Pedro as a child and his relationship with his family and Susana. It is revealed that Susana and Pedro may have loved each other. Who is Susana and who is she to Pedro?

14- The narrator is Pedro, talking about his life in third person. He is thinking about Susana and murmuring to her. His mother comes to the door and he talks to her as she goes away and cries. This scene is focused on Pedro, and his relationship with Susana, as he thinks of her. I noticed that the weather was rainy. It is revealed that Pedro feels quite close to Susana. His mother is also sad for some reason.

15-20-The narrator is Juan. However, in this section, the majority of the talking is done by dona Eduviges. She tells Juan that Abundio is dead. She also tells Juan about his mom’s wedding night and how she was almost Juan’s mother because his mother went to a naked massage man who told her not to sleep with Pedro Paramo on the night of her wedding so Eduviges had to sleep with him instead. Pedro treated her badly and Juan realizes why his mother wanted to make him pay. The scene is focused on Eduviges telling Juan about his mother and Pedro’s wedding night and there is some foreshadowing into Pedro and Dolorita’s relationship revealed. What is the significance of the naked massager?

20 -The narrator is Pedro Paramo. He is still thinking about Susana and talking to her in his thoughts. Pedro talks to his grandmother, complaining about babysitting Rogelio’s son. Pedro feels that he deserves more since he does not even get paid. This scene focuses on Pedro’s relationship with Susana since they are his first thoughts. They were very close, since he remembers such vivid details about her. Is Rogelio a significant character?

21-23-Juan is narrating and talking to Dona Eduviges about Miguel Paramo. Miguel Paramo’s death is revealed and how he died on his horse and the ghost of his horse still goes around looking for him.

23-24-The narrator is Pedro Paramo. He is talking to his mother, who is crying over his father’s death. More insight into the Paramo family is revealed; especially that Pedro’s father was killed. Why does Pedro ask his mother: “And you, Mother? Who killed you?”

25-27-The narrator is once again Pedro Paramo talking about his son, Miguel’s funeral and asking Father Renteria to bless him. The relationship between Pedro and Miguel is revealed, as is more insight into their family. Miguel’s personality is also revealed since Father Rentaria won’t bless him, and Pedro talks about his bad actions (murder, rape).

27-28- Father Renteria is narrating and is talking to his niece, Ana, about the death of Miguel Paramo. He recalls the fact that he raped her and murdered her father. Ana is introduced, as is more insight into the family of Father Renteria. The reason that the Father dislikes Miguel is revealed as well. What did the rest of the town think of Miguel Paramo?

28-30- The narrator is a third person narrator just expanding into the story of Miguel’s death and the town’s opinion of it. There are three random characters (Ubillado, Terencio, and Isias) who are townspeople discussing the matter of the death. They consider that the shooting stars are a celebration of Miguel’s arrival. More about Miguel’s death is revealed (how he died on the horse) and the townspeople’s opinion of him. They seem to be carelessly pained by Miguel’s death. Was Miguel’s death a suicide or an accident?

30-31- The narrator is a third person narrator talking about Father Renteria who is having flashbacks to the death of Eduviges. He remembers how Maria Dyuda came and asked to save her sister, Eduviges. The death of Eduviges is revealed, so now we know for sure that she is a ghost (in the beginning of the novel). What do all the “shooting stars” signify?

32-33-Juan is the narrator talking to Eduviges in the beginning of the section. He then goes to sleep and hears a scream and wakes up to meet Damiana. Damiana tells him about Toribio Aldrete and his death in that room. It is quite apparent now that Juan is in a ghost town, since he is hearing screams and echos of the dead people. Damiana is introduced and so is her past with Juan (since she knew him when he was born). Why is Juan suddenly hearing so many echos?

33-34-The narrator is Fulgor Sedano, a lawyer who charges people when the falsify boundary lines. He goes to talk to Aldrete about the boundaries who blames the Patron. Toribio’s story of his death is introduced, as is the character of Fulgor Sedano. His encounter with Eduvidges is also described, which is strangely similar to the conversation between Eduviges and Juan.

34-37-There is a third person narrator. Don Fulgor is going to Pedro’s house to talk to him about the debts he has to pay back, particularly to the Preciado women. Fulgor tells Pedro to marry dona Dolores to pay back the debt to her. The relationship between Fulgor and Pedro is revealed, as they seem to be acquaintances. Pedro’s opinion toward money and marriage is also revealed, as he deems money more important compared to women.

37-40- Fulgor Sedano is the narrator reflecting on his visit to Pedro. He is wondering why Pedro is so much more aggressive than his father. He then goes to speak to Dolores about marrying Pedro and she agrees. He plans the wedding immediately and goes to talk to the priest about it as well. He then goes to tell Pedro the news. Pedro tells Fulgor to go talk to Aldrete about his boundaries. More of Pedro’s personality is revealed and how he differs from his father, don Lucas Paramo. Pedro’s “popularity” is also shown, particularly through how Dolores accepted his proposal so quickly. He seems manipulative and aggressive with his actions. Why is Pedro notorious for the things he does?

40- third person narrator is explaining how Fulgor goes back to Pedro’s house to tell him he took care of Toribio. Pedro is on his honeymoon. It is revealed that Toribio is killed and Pedro and Dolores are married.

41-43-The narrator is Juan. He is talking to Damiana about the echoes and emptiness of the town. She tells Juan about her sister and how dead people are still wandering about. Juan screams to Damiana if she is alive or not as she disappears. Juan then walks along as two ladies talk about another man crossing the street. There is some insight into Damiana and Juan’s relationship as she tells him about the echoes and as Juan finally starts to realize the dead people around him.Does Juan realize that he is dead yet?

44-45-I think that Juan is the narrator talking about the voices he hears. The voices are the conversation between Fulgor and Galileo about Galileo’s land. Juan’s ability to hear voices is getting stronger, since he actually picks up complete conversations now. I think this means that he is getting closer to realizing he is dead.

45-46-I am not quite sure who the narrator is. I think it might be Juan, and more voices and conversations he is hearing. The first one is between someone and Chona who doesn’t want to leave her father. And the second is just a short stanza.I think this is Juan hearing the voices, which brings him closer to his realization of his death.Who is Chona?

46-47- The naked couple is introduced. Juan’s perspective of everything around him is changing, with the increase of echoes and murmurs surrounding him.

47-53-Juan is narrating. He wakes up among the naked people, Donis and his wife/sister. They tell him the road to get to Sayula, where Juan claims he is heading. Donis leaves and Juan talks to his wife/sister about the dead people and if any of them are still around. The naked people and their relationship is revealed, and Juan’s interaction with them is focused on.

54-55-Juan is narrating. He is sleeping and a women comes to offer him tea who scares him.

55-56- Juan is narrating. He is not sleepy so the woman he is with offers him food. She tells Juan about trading sheets with her sister, and that is the woman that scared Juan before. I think the fact that she had to trade sheets for food highlights that they are dead, since they don’t get food very often.

56- Juan has a conversation with his mother. It is not in italics yet they can’t see each other. This reveals that Juan is getting closer to crossing over.

57- Juan is narrating. He gets into bed with the woman because she says Donis is not coming back. He waves up and feels earth around him, as if he is in mud. He feels himself dying. Juan’s death is revealed.

58-61- Doretea is narrating and talking to Juan about his death. They are both in graves. Juan is telling her about how the murmuring killed him and his illusions and dreams and his night with the naked lady. Doretea is introduced and it is now sure that Juan is dead and has been dead since the beginning of the novel. He has finally “crossed over.” Is everyone in Comala dead then?

61-65- It is a third person narrator. The scene starts with Fulgor and Miguel, who comes to see Damiana. He asks about Dorotea and Miguel wonders what use she is to him. Fulgor starts thinking about Miguel when he was a child and was accused of killing someone. The relationship between Miguel and Damiana is introduced. Are they related? Live together?

65-66- Doretea is narrating and talking about her mother and her sinned soul to Juan. The interesting connection between soul and body is finally focused on, and I like how Doretea perceives her death as her soul escaping through her mouth.

66-68- Third Person Narrator who talks about the death of Miguel. They tell Pedro about the death and brought him the body, saying “his horse killed him.” Pedro had no sorrow, which reveals a somewhat distant relationship between Pedro and Miguel.

68-75- Outside Narration from Father Renteria’s perspective. In the night of Miguel’s death, Father Renteria is thinking about when he first brought don Pedro Miguel as a baby, because his mother had passed away. He then goes to the church to listen to the confessional and speaks to Doretea who is drunk from Miguel’s wake. He goes crazy taking confession again and sees the sins as excuses. His character reveals his hypocrisy to the church.

75-78- Susana is narrating, and reminiscing on her childhood. She is thinking about her mother and feeling lonely. She is babbling to Justina about the day of her mother’s funeral, describing it in vivid detail. Susana’s character seems to be very ambiguous. She believes she is dead (“Because I am dead”) yet she is talking to someone. She seems on the brink of madness. “I see people through a haze … you think I’m crazy? That’s fine.” She realizes her death is coming slowly, and it seems as if she doesn’t care anymore.

78-81- Juan is narrating and he and Doretea are in the graves listening to the other graves around them. Juan hears Susana talking to herself. They talk about Pedro Paramo and his love for Susana and how he really loved her. Doretea says that after Susana started suffering, he lost interest in life. Susana and Pedro’s relationship is introduced clearly and the connection between them seems to be strong. Its interesting how a greedy manipulative character like Pedro can have hardcore feelings for Susana. Susana’s character within the town is shown when Doretea states “Some say she was crazy. Some say not. The truth is that she talked to herself even when she was alive” It seems as if Pedro was the only one that truly appreciated her.

81-82- Outside narration. Fulgor and Pedro are talking about Bartolome San Juan and Susana San Juan arriving back in town. There seems to be a weird relationship revealed between Susana and her father “the way he treats her, she seems more like his wife.”

82-83- Pedro is narrating, talking to himself about Susana, and how she is finally back in town to take care of her father as a widow.

83-85- Susana’s father is speaking in this section to her about the bad village. He tells her that Pedro wants to marry her and she is willing. Her relationship with her father is not the normal father-daughter relationship, considering she refers to him by his first name.

85- Pedro is talking to Fulgor about killing Susana’s father in the mining “accident” so he can marry her and she won’t have any family left. Pedro’s true evil is revealed.

86-89- Third Person narrator who gives a detailed description of Comala. Justina is heading to Susana’s and imagines Susana’s father telling her to leave. Susana awakes and asks Justina about her cat who apparently slept with Susana the night and bothered her. Susana and Justina seem to be close, since they won’t leave each other. Justina has known Susana since she was young. Susana seems like a character that you either love or don’t. Pedro and Susana love her. And the rest of the town thought she was crazy.

89-91- Third person narration in Susana’s perspective. She finds out her father is dead and believes her father came to say good-bye. She reminisces on her childhood where her father lowers her into a mine to find money. It is revealed that Susana really believes that she is dead since she thinks she communicated with her dead father. By Susana’s mind incident, it can be seen that her father abused her physically and sexually at times.

91-93- Third person narrator. Susana is walking around in the dark when Father Renteria comes. Susana thinks about someone named Florencio and how he is dead. She tells Father to go, and asks him why he comes to see her when he is dead. It is interesting that Susana and see/interact with these people that she believes are dead. She seems like she just wants life to end and wants everyone to leave her in peace.

93-95- El Tartamudo comes to Pedro to tell him that Fulgor has been murdered and the revolutionaries were coming for Pedro. Pedro thinks about Susana once more and how she is always sleeping (or pretending to sleep). “But what world was Susana San Juan living in? That was one of the things Pedro Paramo would never know.” This quote makes Susana seems mysterious and hidden, as if she has secrets. Maybe by sleeping so much, she is attempting to rid of her life and just die…

95-96- Susana is narrating and Juan hears her talking in the grave. She talks about how she swims naked in the sea, and embraces the details of her physical being. “It bathes my knees, my thighs; it puts its gentle arm around my waist, circles my breasts, embraces my throat, presses my shoulders.” The way she describes her whole body serenading itself to the sand portrays Susana as someone who is very physical and tangible minded. When coming to the concept of soul vs body, Susana represents the “body” part.

96-98- The revolutionaries come to Pedro’s house for dinner and he makes a deal with them. He promises them money and men and sends them away. This shows Pedro’s manipulative nature.

98-99- El Tilcuate talks to Pedro and finds out that he is the leader of the revolution.
Pedro tells him to gather 300 men and take 10 pesos to each one. It is revealed that Pedro and El Tilcuate are on the same side.

99-100- Juan hears Susana talking about her intimate moments with somebody who died. Once again, her descriptions are filled with touch imagery with represent the body obsession of Susana.

100-101- Susana is sleeping and dreaming as Pedro watches. She is dreaming of Florencio, who we learn (assume) is her previous love or husband. She is asking for his body “But all you care about is souls. And what I want is his body” which reflects the strong touch imagery of Susana. She describes his body and her physical interactions with him, adding to Susana’s character as a tangible person.

101-103- There is not really a narrator. The scene starts with Gerardo, a lawyer, leaving for Sayula to start over his life. He tells Pedro that Tilcualte and his men have been beaten. Pedro thought to thank and repay Gerardo, but he had already left.

103-104- Gerardo comes back and asks for money. Pedro gives it to him and sends him on his way.

105-107- Narrator in Damiana’s perspective. She is looking outside and watching Pedro Paramo with the young girl Margarita, who he rapes. Pedro then comes and pounds on her door but she does not answer. This scene portrays Pedro’s obsession with other women, while he is in love with Susana. I find this odd.

107-108- Damasio comes to Pedro to ask for money, but Pedro turns him away. He thinks about Susana and envisioned her as Margarita when sleeping with her. “A women who is not of this world”, Pedro says to describe Susana. Shows Susana’s unique character.

109-111- Susana and Justina have this interesting conversation about death, heaven and hell. Susana states that she only believes in hell, which means that she has probably sinned a lot in her life. Maybe this is why she wants to die so badly? Pedro arrived to ask Justina about Susana. Father Renteria arrives to give her communion and she refers to him as Florencio. “…to reveal the nakedness of a body beginning to twist and turn in convulsions” Susana seems to be in the brink of madness physically as well as mentally now. Her physical being is now naked (bare of all secrets) and having convulsions that don’t seem painful to her.

111-112- Two women, Fausta and Angeles are watching the light go on and off in Susana’s room. They say she is afraid of the dark. I think the light represents her “Transition” into death. The two women see a man crossing the dark. This reminds me of the beginning of the novel when Juan is walking into Comala and sees two women, and tries to yell to them but nobody hears. Is it the same scene?

113-115- No narrator. The section starts with dialogue between Father Renteria and Susana. He is getting her ready for death by giving her the confession. She is so calm when repeating him, yet the things she is repeating are so physically horrid (“My nose goes spongy. My eyeballs liquefy. My hair burns in a single bright blaze”). The fact that she can say these things calmly really show Susana’s comfortableness with her physical self and her connection to the physical body. Susana just goes to sleep and is not very cooperative with the confessional.

115- Doretea mutters that she just saw Susana die.

115-116- It is the morning of Susana’s burial. The section starts with a detailed description of the morning, even written in short sentences. People think it is a celebration. “Susana San Juan was buried, and few people in Comala even realized it” This shows the importance of her character to the town, which wasn’t much. She was just important in Pedro’s eyes, and wasn’t really popular with the rest of the people. This could add to the fact that she was hidden from the society, which could have led people to believe she was crazy (rumors and such). Pedro refuses to leave his room and curses Comala to die of hunger.

117- El Tilcuate and Pedro speak about revolution

117-118- Outside narrator. Pedro Paramo is sitting in his chair, thinking about Susana and yelling for her to come back. This shows a very emotional romantic side of Pedro, which was unexpected with all his usual actions.

118-123- Ines and Gamaliel work at the liquor store. Abundio walks in and asks for liquor to help soften the pain of his wife’s death. He gets really drunk and tries to make it home, but goes down the wrong direction. He ends up in front of Damiana and Pedro, and Damiana starts to scream and shield herself. Abundio stabs Damiana. [And Pedro? Maybe..] and then is taken away by men to be killed. It is interesting how Abundio says his wife can hear Damiana’s screams. Does that mean Damiana is dead since his wife is dead?

123-124- Pedro watches a procession (Is it Susana’s funeral procession? Or just the men taking Abundio away?) He is sitting miserably waiting to slowly die. He thinks about Susana right before he says “This is death.” Damiana invites him in for dinner and then he dies. It is revealed that Pedro is dead because he can now interact with Damiana who is dead. I find it interesting that every one of his thoughts was about Susana except for his very last one, which was about Abundio. I believe that Pedro’s love for Susana was real, even though his bad character.

Pedro Paramo Characterization Notes - Father Renteria

Section One
1.) page three
2.) Juan Preciado is narrating and he is speaking to a third party. Juan is talking about the day his mother died and his journey to Comala. Juan acts as if he is going to go to Comala because his mother asks him to, but he says that he isn’t going to. Juan seems very indifferent.
3.) We are introduced to Juan Preciado and we learn that he is traveling to the town Comala because his mother asked him to on her death bed. Juan’s father lives in Comala and his name is Pedro Paramo. Juan is supposed to make Pedro pay because it was his mothers dying wish.

§

Section Two
1.) pages four to seven
2.) Juan Preciado is talking with Abundio. They are talking about the town of Comala, which they are on the outskirts of. Juan is also thinking to himself about the fact that Comala is not what he expected. Juan tells Abundio that he is looking for his father, Pedro Paramo, and Abundio is disgueted and says that Pedro is his father as well. Abundio says that Pedro is “living bile.” We also learn that Pedro Paramo has been dead for years.
3.) Juan is talking and we are introduced to Abundio. We learn that Pedro Paramo is dead, but Juan doesn’t seem to mind or even notice. We also learn that it looks like the town of Comala is dead and that nobody has lived there for years.

§

Section Three
1.) pages seven to nine
2.) Juan Preciado is narrating once again and he is talking to himself. Juan is talking about how is mother told him about Comala and that she lied about what it looked like. Juan is searching for dona Eduviges’ house. Juan seems to be very confused about the town of Comala. He says that the town feels alive, but looks dead. And he seems to be questioning whether the people of Comala are dead.
3.) Juan Preciado is narrating and seems to be thinking to himself. In this section Juan seems to question whether the people of Comala are alive or dead, but he doesn’t seem frightened.

§

Section Four
1.) page nine
2.) Juan Preciado is narrating and talking to Abundio. Abundio tells Juan that he should go see Eduviges for a place to stay and to tell her hi if she is still alive. Once again Juan is told about the dead and he seems unfased by it.
3.) Juan is narrating, but most of this section is Abundio talking to Juan. It is revealed to Juan that he needs to see Eduviges and that she may be dead, but that doesn’t make a difference.

§

Section Five
1.) pages nine to eleven
2.) Juan Preciado is still narrating. Juan is thinking to himself and interacting with Eduviges. Eduviges has a room ready for Juan and she knew that he was coming, but there was no bed in his room. She said that Dolores, Juan’s mom, had told her that Juan was coming even though she died a week ago. Juan seems very confused because Eduviges knows who his is and says she is ready for him, but then gets mad because he asks why there isn’t a bed. Juan seems confused, just as the reader is.
3.) In this section Juan actually meets Eduviges and she has the home that everyone seems to find there way to. Eduviges says that Juan should be her son, but we don’t know why. She also says that she spoke to Dolores even though Dolores is dead and that Dolores and her were best friends and were supposed to die together.

§

Section Six
1.) pages eleven to thirteen
2.) Pedro Paramo, as a young child, is narrating this passage. He is speaking with his mother and thinking to himself. Pedro is thinking about Susana and when they would fly kites together. It is obvious that Pedro is in love with Susana even if he is very young.
3.) Both Pedro and Susana are introduced and the audience is introduced to the seemingly obsessive nature that Pedro has with Susana. The audience also learns that Pedro is not seen as good enough by his mother.

§

Section Seven
1.) pages thirteen to fourteen
2.) Pedro Paramo is narrating once again and he is thinking as well as speaking with his Grandmother. His grandmother is asking him where he has been because there is work to be done because Pedro’s family is poor. At the end of this section Pedro is told to borrow from the neighbors. Pedro seems to be distracted by his idealization of Susana and not dedicated like the rest of his family.
3.) This passage is focused on Pedro and it foreshadows who he will become. We see that Pedro’s family borrows as if their family matters more than others and this shows how Pedro will be. We also see Pedro’s obssesion with Susana and how that is what drives him.

§

Section Eight
1.) pages fourteen to fifteen
2.) Pedro Paramo is thinking to himself and talking with his mother. He is thinking about how he misses Susana and his mother is asking him why he didn’t pray for his grandfather who just died. Pedro is sad, but not because of his grandfather, because of Susana.
3.) Pedro is focusing upon Susana and how every thought he has is of her. The audience sees the disconect that Pedro has with his family and how his love for Susana is his driving force. This obession may get in the way.

§

Section Nine
1.) pages fifteen to twenty
2.) Juan is narrating, but dialogue contributed to most of the text. Eduviges is telling Juan about Pedro and Dolores’ wedding night and Juan also has flashbacks of his mother’s words. Juan seems annoyed and bored. He says that Eduviges “drones on” and he the words that Eduviges says seem to impact the reader more than Juan.
3.) We learn that Dolores sends Eduviges in her place to sleep with Pedro and that Abundio was deaf in his last years and is now dead.

§

Section 10
1.) pages 20 to 21
2.) Pedro Paramo is narrating, but most of the passage is him talking to to his grandmother. Pedro is speaking in a very conceited tone and he is very arrogant.
3.) Pedro assumes that just because he’s an apprentice that doesn’t mean that he should do the work. Someone else can be patient for him and this foreshadows the landowner he will become.

§

Section 11
1.) pages 21 to 23
2.) Juan is narrating and is once again talking to Eduviges. Eduviges talks about the night that Miguel died. This is the first time in the novel that Juan seems to show discomfort about the dead. He can hear the horse, but he’s convinced it’s not a horse.
3.) The tone that Juan has shows the unrest that he has, yet he seems to accept it at the same time. This could foreshadow how Juan handles the reality of life and death. The audience also learns about how Miguel died and seeing that he loved someone softens his image a bit.

§

Section 12
1.) pages 23 to 24
2.) Pedro is narrating and his mother is in this scene. Pedro seems annoyed once again and detached.
3.) Pedro learns that his father has been murdered and he does not seem saddened by it at all. He is more concerned with Susana and he asks his mother who killed her.

§

Section 13 - Father Renteria Passage
1.) pages 25 to 26
2.) There is an unknown third person narrator, but much of the passage consists of dialouge. Miguel’s funeral is the setting and issue of purgatory, heaven and hell is addressed.
3.) This passage shows the contrasting reality and morals of Father Renteria. Father Renteria hates Miguel with a passion because he killed his brother and raped his niece. Father Renteria knows that it’s not right to pardon someone that lived an immoral life and didn’t repent. Father Renteria says this openly and refuses to pardon Miguel. Then Pedro pays Father Renteria and he pardons him. This corruption shows what is right and wrong and why Father Renteria shows the town what is right and wrong.

§

Section 14 - Father Renteria Passage
1.) pages 26 to 28
2.) There is an unknown third person narrator, but most of the passage is dialogue between Father Renteria and his niece Ana. Father Renteria seems very controlling and unsatisfied because he pushes and pushes try and get Ana to tell him that Miguel was for sure the one who raped her.
3.) This section shows Father Renteria to be, once again, a man of morals that cannot portray his morals correctly. He is controlling and stubborn. Father Renteria refuses to listen to Ana saying that she doesn’t remember or know if it Miguel. Father Renteria has decided that it was and although he has good intentions, he doesn’t have show these feelings. He knows what is right, and yet he does the wrong thing.

§

Section 15 - Father Renteria Section

3.) Father Renteria is thinking to himself about how he didn’t pardon Eduviges. He feels guilty because she was a good woman and a church goer. Father Renteria is questioning the choices that he made because he always makes the wrong decision and then knows what is right. This makes sense since he is the conscience of Comala.

§

Section 16
1.) pages 32 to 33
2.) Juan is narrating again and is talking with Eduviges. Damiana meets Juan in this section and we hear her diagloue only. Damiana seems sad because she says how Eduviges’ soul must be wondering around, so Juan hears how Eduviges is dead.
3.) Juan doesn’t seem startled by the fact of death once again and perhaps this shows that Juan has not yet accepted his own death, or just death in general.
